Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist, Aleatha Aiken-Sherrer

Aleatha Aiken-Sherrer is a chronic hobby collector, a hairstylist, a painter, and a jewelry maker. In her spare time she bakes, sews, crochets, watches clouds from her hammock, and most recently is learning pottery. She sells her creations at Artistic Hair Gallery, Brockville and at the Merrickville Maker’s Market.

For the art auction, Aleatha created: Cozy Homes
Aleatha explains the piece in the following:
Inspired by a painting I recently completed, “Cozy Homes” conveys the comfort I feel from seeing signs of life glowing through the windows of homes when I am out for a stroll after dark. I feel as though I am not alone in the world, even though everyone else is settled into their own little nests. This piece is a representation of these warm fuzzy feelings.

Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist, Alan Motluck

Alan Motluk was Born in Georgetown ON. Alan fallowed a path of creativity through an interest in architecture and interior design. His fascination with blacksmithing, inspired by the fantasy genre, lead to the study of welding, metal work, and fine arts.

Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist: Brenda Clarke

Brenda Clarke has recently found her passion for painting. She has developed her talent through formal training and practice. She was accepted in the 2016 juried show at the Marianne Van Silfhout Gallery at S.L.C. Inspired by the 1000 Islands and her love of life, she creates art in a variety of styles, mostly in acrylic medium.

For the art auction, Brenda created: All Aboard
Brenda shares that this piece was “inspired by our recent call to adventure in the form of a cross Canada tent camping trip last summer. It is meant to inspire exploration of places within and without and enjoy the peace that self-discovery can bring.”

Ariana Chasse is an emerging abstract mixed media artist and photographer from Brockville, Ontario. From mental health promotion, spiritual practices, and a desire to move and travel, Ariana creates pieces that she hopes will bring her viewers into the deeper layers of her mind and soul.

Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist: Courtney Bears

Courtney is a portrait and fantasy illustration artist working in primarily in pencil, coloured pencil, acrylic and watercolour. She aims to create happiness through her art and is humbled when she can evoke an enjoyment and interest from others.

For the art auction, Courtney created: Utopia, inspired by the concept of “Bubble Goth”. As Courtney explains, “Bubble Goth is the idea of making the beautiful, creepy and the creepy, beautiful. I interpreted the style by unifying light and dark with the use of miscellaneous objects and acrylic paints.”

Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist: Esther Aiken

Esther has worked with marginalized youth for 25 years, and is embarking on a new path. Esther enjoys cooking, gardening, and spending time with her family. Her favourite season is spring, when the new shoots come out of the ground, and new growth begins. It gives her joy, and hope, always.

For the art auction, Esther created: The Little Chair
Esther shares her inspiration in the following,
““The Little Chair” was in my room when I was a child. It has seen many moves, kids, friends and pets. The inspiration for this redesign came from the lines in the chair, which resemble bamboo, and my two youngest children, whose birthplace is China.”

Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist, Jeannine Robertson

Jeannine was born in Montreal in 1931. She studied at the Musée des Beaux Arts, with Arthur Lismer, G. Weber, and Jacques de Tonnancourt. She has exhibited her paintings and sculpture in solo and group shows throughout Canada and in Europe and the U.S. Her work is in collections worldwide.

As she explains,
Plato taught that there was a realm of Forms that stood apart from, yet informed, the sensible world. So, according to Plato, any given chair we encounter is a pale imitation of an ideal chair that typifies the very idea of “chairness.” Though, of course, one cannot sit in it.”

Meet CHAIR-ity Artist: Heather Morandin

Heather is an emerging artist raised in Nepean, Ontario. Favouring acrylic, she is always looking for new ways to employ this medium. With her art, Heather’s desire is to create a lasting impact by challenging set normalities, pushing boundaries, and saying what most others are often afraid to.

As she explains, “My chair titled Candy Paint refers to the use of metallic colour and varnish on its surface. This piece was done in black, white, and copper acrylic. Painted to resemble a high-gloss automobile finish, this rickety chair has consistent layers of translucent metallics over a dark base.”

Meet CHAIR-ity 2018 Artist: Jennifer Sine

Jennifer is a graduate of Craft and Design specializing in ceramic art. Other mediums such as painting, mosaics and artful basketry were largely self-taught. A horticultural background allows even a plot of soil to become her canvas. Jennifer has participated in A Country Home Christmas, Art In The City, Art In The Park, several home shows and is a locally known horticultural fanatic.

For the art auction, Jennifer created: A Flight of Butterflies
About the work:
My fascination with all the tiny creatures I see while working in the garden led to the butterflies I have painted on this little chair.  Their astounding ability to make their work seem like a dance in the air, with all their exquisite colours and patterns. always motivates me to take a seat for a bit and enjoy the show.”

A Flight of Butterflies is on display until April 12th at Wild Little Roses Flowers and Gift Shop, 7 Perth Street, Brockville.

Jodi Wallace is a local real estate agent, wife, mother of 4, and artist.  She works primarily with oils and acrylics, and her work usually has an animal theme.
